A Special Type of Burnt Offering |
The place to find the word ‘holocaust’ in The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia is in Volume 9, 1943, p. 307 under the heading “Sacrifice”: |
“Another ancient form of the sacrifice was the holocaust (‘olah or kalil), in which the entire animal was burnt upon the altar, and the one who offered it received no share of it; another form was the todah (“thank–offering”), which was offered as a rule on the occasion of the fulfillment of a vow…With the exception of doves, only male animals might be offered as holocausts. Every morning and evening there was a perpetual holocaust (tamid), to which were added especially rich sacrifices on the Sabbaths and festivals, as well as the consecration sacrifices when the priests enter upon their offices (Ex. 29; Lev. 8).” The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, 1943, volume 9, p. 307. |
“Nevertheless, the story of the actual sacrifice of the daughter of Jephthah (Judges II), as well as the reports of the evil practices of Ahaz, Manasseh and others, show that there were human sacrifices in ancient Israel, although these were for the most part a result of the influence of the cult of Moloch.” The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, 1943, volume 9, p. 306-307. The word “holocaust” is an English language word that purported first appeared in the Roman Catholic Jesuit “Douay-Rheims” translation of The Holy Bible in Numbers 29: 2. |

The Old Testament translation was completed and published in Douay, France, in 1609-1610. Thus the name “Douay-Rheims.” The Encyclopedia Britannica, 1910, Volume 3, p. 901. |
The underlying word in Numbers 29: 2 that’s translated “holocaust” in the Douay-Rheims Version and “burnt offering” in the Authorized Version is ‘olad.
